FINAL POST WOOT

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DcE29xlFCJwdVgpK2BQn-KWf9dph0zUok7ig16U3LjQ/edit?usp=sharing Let’s talk about collaboration, let’s talk about compromise, let’s talk about how eerily similar all the English teaching students were and how desperately I wanted to work with them because I knew it would be so easy BUT that’s okay! And I’m grateful for what I learned about group work, because it’s been a long time since I did something like this. It was good for me because when I ask my students to do group work, they will butt heads. Someone will be dominant, some people will hang back, and some people will be all in. I certainly won’t shy away from assigning group work—in fact, this class has made me a lot more invested in group work as a tool of education—but I do think it’s important to understand the complications that can come from shoving students together and asking them to create. BYU is wildly heterogeneous, but our schools won’t be. What happens when students in one gro...

DMP Visual/Mediascape Draft for introductory sequence

Sound : Heartbeat track The heartbeat track will play for the duration of the opening sequence. It's simple and rhythmic, which will be nice because of how haphazard the introduction might feel (it's a bunch of quotes from the different interviews/stories we have). To some people, it's identifiable as a heartbeat, but to others it sounds a little like a bass drum, which I think is really lovely. The duality is important, because so much of our project is about the personal experience; how we each translate our experiences. Visuals : Time-lapse gifs The original idea was to have just one time-lapse of a flower, but I personally thought that was a little too on the nose. SO I compiled a collection of a bunch of different time-lapse gifs. Some of them are flowers, some of them are weather, etc. I think the variety could be really beautiful and fun, and I think the essence of what a time-lapse gif can capture is perfect: it's a lot of progress captured in a just a small...

Catalogue Presentation

Words I like Resume Rationale because, first and foremost, it introduces variances in genre, which is completely invaluable. Resumes are very specific, which makes them relatively easy to teach. This leaves the actual project--application of a principle that they are familiar with--with most of the real estate, which is perfect. Pushing students to look at something they may understand from only aspect from a completely different viewpoint will allow them to discover new ideas, both about the principle and about themselves. English: Resume for a theme, like guilt, communication, relationships, to build a thorough knowledge and analysis of concept. Drama: Resume of a character, to help build understanding of the character. Images Color Palette is interesting, again, in its genre-bending. It allows for personal creativity in a thoroughly personal, introspective way, but also calls for more extensive analysis and textual/experiential support than they may have had to claim p...

Textual Poaching

Image
For my remix, I took one of Rupi Kaur’s poems and covered all words but a few to create my own poem. It was fun, and significantly more difficult than I anticipated. I liked the end result because it isn’t something I would’ve ever come up with without the preemptive structure, but it is still original and creative in its own right. If the picture is hard to read, the poem is as follows:             As a big one is thunder,             I make meat to cut the crackle.             I’d take your eyes.             I am the whiskey             With expectations. I don’t like Ms. Kaur’s poetry. I don’t think it’s profound, or particularly thoughtful; I think it’s highly digestible, and therefore highly ...

Process

https://youtu.be/iNsCVG_edDo The most interesting thing about my process project was the elimination. I thought of many ideas. Some were silly, or mundane, or private. I initially wanted to film the process of going down a set of stairs, or tying a shoe—this idea quickly bored me, even with all my ideas about filming gimmicks. Then I thought I could film the process of my fiancé packing up his things at midnight each night and walking back to his apartment—this idea only last a minute or two, because frankly that’s a pretty intimate part of my life and sharing it in front a university class is not necessarily something I’m comfortable with. The project I ended up doing is a weird washi-tape creation on the living room wall of my apartment. I honestly should have just filmed the process of me trying to set up filming the process, because it was an ordeal. As I write this, there’s a chair atop a sofa in my living room, upside down, covered in spools of decorative tape. While I ...

Seat Assignment

Seat Assignment 1.      Find something on the main floor of the HFAC and look at it until you have connected it to something deeply rooted in your soul. It must be something you find in a physical location, not something you search for on a device. (Is it a piece of art that parallels your religious beliefs? Is it an askew tile in the ceiling that coincides with how you feel in social situations? Is it a person showing such earnestness in his or her actions that you feel inspired to be better or different?) Study this thing until you’ve really given all your emotions to it. 2.      Now write exactly ten words that come close to showing a) how you feel and b) what you’re seeing.

Medium Specificity

https://giphy.com/gifs/birdbrow-LW40TCK0cPEuakXeM1/tile For my project, I made a tiny little animation of a man whose eyebrow turns into a bird. I did this by taking pictures of the different stages of the transformation and combining them all using a gif making app. I’ve made gifs before, but only by converting live photos or videos. I think this is a celebration because this incredibly easy-to-use app takes something that, to an outsider, is very intimidating, and makes it very accessible. I like to draw and doodle, and I think illustrative gifs are way fun. However, I am no illustrator and the idea of creating an animation feels woefully out of my league. But when I first had the idea, all it took was a bit of poking around the app to figure out what I needed to do, and then voila: a weird eyebrow-bird situation was born. I like this because it stretched my creativity while building off a skill I already had, which is frankly my favorite way to create. Gifs, in their own right, ...

Revised Prompt: Digital Adaptation

Read Larry Woiwode's   Ode to an Orange  and explore the listed mentor texts. A dapt the essence of Woiwode's original story into a new digital/social medium. The work you produce should maintain something from the original story and also create something new and uniquely your own. Mentor texts:  A. Todd Smith's 3 minute film   Ode to an Orange  (http://studentfilms.byu.edu/?p=57) Ex. Ex. Ex. Technology Goal: Utilize a medium that you are familiar with but actively learn something new about the medium while creating. OR Use a medium that you have never used and figure out how to use it while creating. Writing about the project 500 Words: Discuss how your creation expanded your understanding of the original text and your understanding of the medium through which you worked. Discuss your responses to the other works of art created in the class, and how they expanded your understanding of text/mediums.

Digital and Social Media Adaptation

https://orangeode.tumblr.com/ If students can catch the creative bug, they will be caught between an immediate, intuitive desire to plunge in and begin working—don’t lose the vision! don’t forget any of those good ideas! this is exciting!—and the fear that such immediate action, or in fact any creative actions, will be terminated, discouraged, or hedged by failure or judgement. This is, upon close examination (or any sort of conscious examination, for that matter), a terrifying place to be. Creativity is so tremulously, inherently vulnerable. Expression of self via creativity cannot really be avoided or disguised (if it can be “avoided,” then maybe it is not creativity at all), and perhaps this is heightened by the online avatar that roleplays for the self. The internet may appear to be a separation, and therefore a safety net through which creativity is more fluently and fluidly exercised, but in reality the internet has far too much power, potential, and influence to really ...
