A candle in my apartment, where candles are banned. Agency: to understand a rule, why it exists, and make a decision based off what you think is acceptable/right.
Like we talked about in class, I love your use of lighting in this image! Your definition of agency was very interesting to me, too--that agency is not just about making decisions, but decisions specifically about, or based on, what you think or know to be right or wrong. I think the way you have the candle lit, and the caption about the rule regarding candles, demonstrates your point so well! I was thinking about how if someone was unaware of the rule and lit a candle in your apartment, they would not know if that was right or wrong and our perspective on their choice would be very different.
Allie, your image and caption introduce a really interesting relationship between agency and knowledge. In class you also connected the idea with the account of Eve and the Garden of Eden. Is willfully pushing against rules or choosing not to follow them important at times? I know I get so trapped in rule following sometimes that it is mentally unhealthy for me. And yet we are told to always do what is right. I guess that’s what is exciting about agency though. As you pointed out, agency allows us to determine if we think a rule is even important or right to follow.
